The boundless apartment

Project Type

picture book

Year

2025

During a summer vacation in primary school, the protagonist is sent to stay at his grandparents’ old apartment building. The story unfolds within this aging complex, where his grandfather works as the building caretaker and his grandmother frequently hosts lively gatherings with her friends.

Whenever the apartment fills with laughter and overlapping voices, the protagonist feels deeply uneasy.

Seen through his perspective, the “visitors” in the building become symbolic intruders — outsiders who disrupt his sense of stability and quietly influence the course of his life. Their arrival becomes the subtle force that pushes him to step away from home, if only for a while.

After accidentally discovering a touch of magic, he gains the ability to move freely between the apartment’s public corridors and its private interiors. This newfound freedom marks the beginning of his exploration. He wanders, observes, and contemplates the lives unfolding behind closed doors.

Through these quiet journeys, he gradually returns to himself — and begins to understand his own place within the world he once wished to escape.
The apartment setting draws inspiration from Tainan, the artist’s hometown, blending the city’s warm nostalgia with stylistic traces from different eras. The result is a space that feels both refined and rustic — a layered aesthetic shaped by time.

The characters are inspired by distinctly Taiwanese “aunties” — figures who are flamboyant, slightly gaudy, yet endlessly fascinating. Through unexpected and carefully balanced color clashes, these elements come together to form a visual language that is uniquely its own.
